Water source analysis project ensures people’s health.
1. Introduction
Access to clean and safe water is essential for public health and sustainable community development. Recognizing the importance of this issue, the Overseas Kids Foundation (OKF) has implemented several initiatives to assess, analyze, and improve water quality in rural communes of Phu Tho Province. The project has been carried out in two phases — in 2014 and 2022 — covering multiple communes including Minh Hac, Yen Luat, Xuan Ang, Vo Tranh, and Bang Gia.
The goal of these efforts is to provide accurate, science-based data on local water sources and propose practical solutions for improving sanitation and health conditions, particularly for children and families in disadvantaged communities.
2. Objectives
- Assess the current condition of water sources and evaluate the existing water treatment methods for domestic and wastewater systems.
- Identify major risks and contamination factors affecting the health of local residents.
- Propose evidence-based plans for improving water quality and wastewater treatment, in collaboration with local authorities and communities.
- Develop long-term strategies for sustainable water management and environmental protection in the communes.
- Prepare OKF’s future support plan for providing technical assistance, training, and necessary water treatment equipment.
3. Key Results
-
2014: Conducted a detailed water resource assessment in Minh Hac Commune.
Based on the findings, a water purification station was constructed at the Minh Hac Commune People’s Committee headquarters.
The station has been maintained and operated by local authorities since its establishment and continues to supply clean water to residents. -
2022: Expanded the study to include five communes — Minh Hac, Yen Luat, Xuan Ang, Vo Tranh, and Bang Gia.
Comprehensive laboratory analyses were performed on collected water samples, assessing chemical and microbiological indicators of water quality. -
Proposed a technical plan for upgrading and installing water treatment systems suitable for rural communities.
Recommendations were shared with local authorities to improve community health through safe water access. -
The project created a data foundation for future OKF-supported initiatives on environmental sanitation,
capacity building for local water management, and public health awareness.
